WHY COZY COUCH COUNSELING?

From a young age, I was drawn to psychology, counseling, and the desire to help others. I vividly remember watching movies where someone would lie on a therapist’s couch, sharing their innermost fears and concerns. The image of that couch always fascinated me. I wondered why they were lying down, opening up about their lives to someone they barely knew. After more than a decade working in the counseling field, I delved into the symbolism and meaning behind the use of couches in therapy.

I learned that the tradition dates back to the early 20th century when Sigmund Freud introduced psychoanalysis. Freud believed that the unconscious mind holds the key to our psychological struggles and that the most effective way to access it was through free association—a technique where the patient speaks freely without filtering their thoughts. The therapist then interprets these thoughts, helping the individual uncover hidden feelings and insights. The couch became a symbol of comfort, encouraging patients to relax and open up more fully, allowing for deeper self-exploration.

For many, this comfort is essential to feeling safe and vulnerable in therapy. That sense of ease is something I strive to cultivate in my practice. I aim to create a welcoming, supportive space where clients can reflect and engage in meaningful self-discovery. This idea of comfort and introspection inspired the name of my practice, Cozy Couch Counseling. Here, you’ll find a place to feel at ease, supported, and truly heard.
