WHY COZY COUCH COUNSELING?

I was quite young when I first became interested in psychology, counseling, and helping others. I recall watching movies where someone would lie on a therapist's couch, sharing their deepest fears and concerns. The use of a couch in therapy always intrigued me. I wondered why the person was lying down, sharing details of their life with someone they barely knew. After over a decade of experience working in the field, I sought to find the meaning behind using couches in therapeutic counseling sessions.

I discovered that using couches in therapy dates back to the early 20th century when Sigmund Freud began practicing psychoanalysis. Freud believed that the unconscious mind was the source of all psychological problems and that the best way to access the unconscious was through free association. Free association is a technique in which the patient says whatever comes to mind without censoring themselves. The therapist then listens to the patient's free associations and interprets them, helping them understand their unconscious thoughts and feelings.

The use of a couches in free association symbolizes comfort. The relief that comes from feeling comfortable allows people to be more open and willing to engage in sharing their thoughts and feelings. Moreover, this sense of solace can benefit people who have difficulty opening up in therapy.

I aim to create an atmosphere where people feel at ease and can focus their attention on introspection and self-reflection. Through this, I aim to promote a sense of safety and support during therapeutic exploration, hence the name Cozy Couch Counseling.
